CPL Racing CNC ported cylinder head service for BMW Mini / JCW Cooper S (2nd gen) N14 engine (donor cylinder head not included). At CPL Racing we have been porting cylinder heads for 20 years. Our recent acquisition of a new 5 axis CNC machining centre however, has allowed us to expand our services further into CNC ported cylinder heads. Unlike any other company, we do not digitise hand ported heads and reproduce them by CNC machining. Our process is a completely new approach which begins by digitising the stock head. Various ports are then designed using computer aided design (CAD), using formulas we have developed over many years complemented by our extensive knowledge. The various ports are then machined into stock heads and tested for both flow and velocity on our computerised flow bench. Once the optimum port has been designed and tested it is then offered for sale. The N14 cylinder head is of particular interest to CPL Racing. It has a huge amount of potential and the engine is considerably restricted by the bottleneck evident within. CNC porting is a superior method of cylinder head porting. Even the most experienced hand porters could never realise the repeatability achieved when compared to a CNC ported cylinder head. Whether this be from one port to another on the same cylinder head, or from one cylinder head to another. There are two types of CNC porting. The port is developed via hand porting and then digitised, following this a CNC program is generated. The port is designed using computer aided design, optimised and then a CNC program generated. Method 1 is merely a hand ported head converted for machining. Method 2 is designed utilising computer software and therefore is far more accurate. Additionally, computer designed ports can use CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to aid optimisation. All of CPL Racings CNC heads are computer designed using the superior method 2 above.
